In 1980, Azar Nafisi, a professor of literature, returned from America to Tehran to teach English literature at the university there. It was the year following the so-called ‘Islamic/Iranian Revolution’, in which a movement comprising religious and secular groups had fought to bring about the end of the monarchy in Iran. Nafisi hopes that things will now improve in her homeland – but instead, the country is transformed into a theocracy.
She tries to resist the regime’s oppression and sets up a book club for her female students, in which they discuss banned books such as "Lolita" and "Pride and Prejudice".
Based on Azar Nafisi’s memoirs, published in 2003, the film depicts an intellectual’s resistance to the terror of the dictatorship.
