Helen (Claire Foy) is a young university lecturer who teaches the history of science and philosophy at Cambridge and is about to apply for a postdoctoral position in Germany. Then a phone call from her mother throws her off course: her beloved father has died unexpectedly of a heart attack. Helen reacts to his death differently from what those around her expect. She pays little attention to the funeral arrangements, instead withdrawing further and further into herself, and she hatches a plan: she wants to train a goshawk for falconry.
