Obsession – Du sollst mich lieben

The film is set in the present, but is reminiscent of the slacker films of the 90s: mumblecore dialogue, four twenty-somethings, a McJob in the music business and a quiz night once a week. Bear is head over heels in love with Nikki but doesn’t have the guts to tell her and gives her a souvenir from a shabby esoteric shop – a “one wish willow” which grants wishes when you break it. He uses the magic on himself and wishes for Nikki to “love him more than anything else in the world.” The chemistry in the room immediately changes – not in a good way. Nikki is obsessed with Bear and becomes more and more psychotic and dangerous. Using horror film tropes but disturbingly close to everyday reality, OBSESSION is about domestic abuse, about what it feels like when the person next to you suddenly becomes dangerous, when every word or every gesture can be a trigger.
