An egg falls onto a metal conveyor belt, is sorted, inspected and incubated until a dark-feathered chick, along with a thousand other yellow chicks, rolls along conveyor belts once more, falls through chutes and lands on cold concrete floors. The cute, dark-feathered chick grows into a chicken, and it is lucky: instead of ending up on the slaughtering block, it flees to freedom, until it finally ends up back in a cage, with a man who is himself struggling to survive with his family …

Director György Pálfi is not staging a cute animal story. Rather, the chicken and its fate serve as the vehicle for a story about exploitation, alienation and violence, but also about the unbroken hope for a better life.
