When Lightning Flashes Over the Sea

Grace and Jackson, a young couple, move from New York to Montana to live in Jackson’s father’s empty house. What appears to be an idyllic country life turns into a trap of boredom and responsibility for the young mother. She is constantly needed, yet nobody needs her. She is almost always alone with the child. She is, above all, a body – a mother’s body. Adrift and without a anchor, she passes through a succession of fluctuating states of consciousness: playfulness, sensuality, depression, aggression, dissociation, delusion.

In her adaptation of Ariana Harwicz’s novel of the same name, Lynne Ramsay translates the eminently literary form of the inner monologue into an almost exclusively visual format.

The 3001 is a 91-seat arthouse cinema. It is located in the heart of Hamburg’s Schanzenviertel neighborhood, in the courtyard of the Schanzenhof. Its program features sophisticated arthouse films, feature films, and documentaries, as well as small-scale productions that have to make do without funding or a large advertising budget. Almost all films are shown in their original language with subtitles.

Located not far from the University of Hamburg, the Abaton Cinema is one of the pioneers of the arthouse cinema movement in Germany and has been screening European and international art films in three theaters since 1970—mostly in their original language with subtitles. Once a year, Allendeplatz in front of the cinema becomes the festival hub for the Hamburg International Film Festival. At the cinema bar, Andrea and Ignazio have been behind the counter for nearly 25 years, serving refreshments, snacks, and popcorn.

The Alabama Kino is Kampnagel's unique arthouse cinema.

Apollo Cinema is an award-winning arthouse cinema located in Aachen’s lively Pontviertel district. With around 150 first-run films each year, its carefully curated program focuses on outstanding international and German arthouse cinema, with an increasing number of screenings presented in their original language with subtitles.

In addition to its regular program, Apollo hosts a variety of special events, including its popular Sunday evening sneak preview (always in the original version with subtitles), the "From Literature to Film" series in cooperation with the RWTH Aachen Institute of German Literary Studies, and the monthly "Classic Gems" screenings. 

Since 2025, Apollo has also been the home of the newly established Aachen Film Festival. Visitors can also enjoy a well-stocked bar, making the cinema a welcoming place to experience great films.

In 1958, the Savoy Theater was Germany's most modern cinema, featuring 70 mm projection, a 165-square-metre curved screen, and six-channel magnetic sound. Its second auditorium, the atelier, was dedicated entirely to arthouse cinema. Today, the Savoy hosts renowned comedy and live music performances, while the atelier, after a period as a venue for cabaret and live entertainment, has been transformed into a state-of-the-art arthouse cinema.

The Babylon Kino am Stadtpark combines contemporary arthouse cinema with a relaxed café and bistro atmosphere. Alongside its carefully curated film program, the in-house café invites visitors to enjoy homemade cakes, snacks, and regional beverages.

Bali Kino Berlin

Since opening in 1963, the cinema's main auditorium has remained largely unchanged. Its unique interior, featuring a circular star-studded ceiling, was designed to resemble a circus tent. In 2018 and 2019, the cinema team lovingly restored the smaller auditorium and foyer, while comfortable new seats made the Bambi an even more charming place to enjoy films.

A special highlight of the Bambi is its outdoor foyer, where visitors can relax before and after the screening during the summer months.

B-Movie

The B-Movie is an independent, volunteer-run cinema in St. Pauli.

The Bonner Kinemathek, located in the Brotfabrik cultural center, has been an integral part of Bonn's cinema scene since 1986 and a home for outstanding film culture. Founded as a student initiative with the aim of bringing film art beyond the mainstream to local audiences, it has grown into a well-established cultural institution and a vibrant meeting place for film lovers.

As an independent arthouse cinema, it presents a carefully curated program featuring international arthouse films, classics, documentaries, children's films, and themed film series, many of them screened in their original language with subtitles.

In addition to its regular program, the Bonner Kinemathek hosts a wide range of special events, collaborations, and film festivals. Set within the unique atmosphere of the Brotfabrik cultural center, the cinema combines cinematic discoveries with cultural diversity.

The BrotfabrikKino is one of the Brotfabrik’s founding projects. In operation since May 1990, it has changed locations within the building but has remained true to its programming principles: In addition to the regular film program, the cozy 60-seat theater hosts special events on film history, festivals, lectures, and readings. A particular focus is on collaborations and documentary films that address current social issues.

The first thing you see on the façade of b-ware!ladenkinos is THIS IS NOT A CINEMA. It certainly isn’t a traditional movie theatre – b-ware offers a video store, a bar, and 3 rooms in the back that show art house films. Decorated with a mix of rococo upholstered furniture, industry and kitsch, b-ware!ladenkinos opens its doors daily at noon.

In 1976, the cinema opened in a former printing works on Kopernikusplatz. In 2009, it was refurbished by a group of cinema enthusiasts and has since been run by the non-profit association Casa e.V. with the support of many volunteers. The cinema screens the latest arthouse films, classics and festivals on three screens using modern technology, all in a cosy atmosphere. A special focus is on films in their original language, documentaries and short films – and on running the cinema in a sustainable manner.

The Casablanca is the ‘cinema with courage’ in Nuremberg’s Südstadt district.

The Bürgerbräu is a former brewery that has been transformed into a cultural and creative hub since 2011. The Central screens films in two auditoriums located in the brewery's former beer storage cellars. Its program focuses on arthouse cinema, often beyond the mainstream and increasingly in their original language. Operated as a cooperative, the cinema is collectively owned by more than 500 people from Würzburg.

With its three screening rooms, the Cinema has been bringing the best of arthouse cinema to Wuppertal-Oberbarmen since 1919.

Opened in 1957 as a continuous cinema with a daily changing program, it has since evolved into a first-run arthouse cinema. Today, it showcases carefully selected arthouse films and is a popular venue for film premieres with special guests – not least thanks to its welcoming cinema café.

The Cinema im Ostertor opened on November 7, 1969, making it Germany's first arthouse cinema.

The Cinenova in Cologne-Ehrenfeld combines a movie theater, dining, a beer garden, and an open-air cinema.

Since 1974, CITY 46 has been a place for dialogue and exchange about film culture. As a municipal cinema, it sees itself not only as a venue for film screenings, but also as a space for encounters, discussion, and cinematic discoveries.

The program features films from around the world in their original language with subtitles, as well as numerous special events with guest speakers and filmmakers. CITY 46 is a member of the Bundesverband kommunale Filmarbeit e.V. (The German Association of Municipal Cinemas).

In September 2014, the operators of City Kino Wedding began screening films in the beautiful retro theater at the “Centre Français de Berlin,” initially every other weekend. Since then, it has regularly featured a selection of current arthouse films. In addition, City Kino Wedding organizes a wide variety of special events and guest appearances, often in collaboration with the Centre Français.

E-Werk Kino

Filmforum im Museum Ludwig 

The municipal cinema offers its audience international premieres, themed programmes, retrospectives, film talks and panel discussions, silent films with live music and children’s films, and serves as a venue for several festivals, such as the NIHRFF – Nuremberg International Human Rights Film Festival – and the Turkish-German Film Festival. During the late-evening slot on several weekdays, one screen is run by the voluntary association ‘Kommkino e.V.’, which is dedicated to underground cinema, with a focus on trash films, Asian cinema and independent cinema.

The Filmhaus offers active filmmakers workspaces for film and video editing and production, a sound booth for professional recordings, as well as various group rooms used by film-related associations. The Filmhaus Café is located in the foyer of the Künstlerhaus.

Filmhaus Köln 

Filmhaus Köln is an institution dedicated to film culture and a meeting place for audiences and the film community.

Up to seven different films are shown each day in two theaters at staggered times; on Sundays, there are sometimes nine. Filmkunst 66 usually shows dubbed versions (Mondays are for films with original audio and subtitles), but films for which no dubbed version exists also find their way into the program. Documentaries and children’s films are a regular part of the lineup. Berlin premieres and team premieres with audience Q&As take place regularly.

Every summer, filmRaum invites you to enjoy movies under the open sky in Eimsbüttel City Park.

Since 1991, Filmrausch Moabit e.V. has been running the only cinema in Berlin’s Moabit district: on the first floor of the Kulturfabrik on Lehrter Straße, run entirely by volunteers who love and live for cinema. The programme is all about diversity: new releases and classics, arthouse and genre films, Asian cinema and Berlin film culture, experimental works and cult films. Equipped with state-of-the-art Sony 4K projection technology, Filmrausch also regularly screens films on original 35mm and 16mm film stock and, more recently, on VHS. Every summer, the rear courtyard, nestled between brick walls and railway tracks, is transformed into an open-air cinema.

The only cinema in Moabit, run by a collective of cineastic enthusiasts.

The Hasenheide cinema is the only open-air cinema in Germany to have had two stages since 2021. Every day throughout the season, the cinema shows a movie for children and families in the afternoon on the small stage—the screen is shielded from daylight. The “New Stage” is wheelchair accessible. Strollers can also be brought along without any problems. It is recommended to book tickets in advance.

The open-air movie theater in the middle of the park was built in the 1950s as a natural theatre.

The Insel Open-Air Cinema is making a guest appearance at the Atelier Gardens on the southern edge of Tempelhofer Feld. On the grounds of the Berlin Union-Film Studios, the cinema screens independent films, the latest arthouse highlights, short films, documentaries, and festival specials four days a week.

Since 1998, the Friedrichsbau has been run as an arthouse cinema. It is dedicated to sophisticated cinema from all over the world. It is also home to documentary films – and the ‘Kinderkino’ adventure, featuring children’s film classics at a pocket-money price of just 3 euros. Not to mention the French Film Week, the Italian film tour ‘Cinema! Italia!, the fortnightly Friedrichsbau Sneak Preview and the monthly ‘Wednesday Nite at the Movies’ with Rolf Luchs. The much-loved Summer Night Cinema, held in the cosy courtyard of the Schwarzes Kloster in July and August, is also organised by the Friedrichsbau. In the Friedrichsbau’s largest auditorium, a short film is screened as a supporting feature before every evening screening.

Together with the Harmonie and Kandelhof cinemas, the Friedrichsbau forms the ‘Freiburg Independent Cinemas’, which were awarded the prize for Europe’s best programme by the Europa Cinemas network in 2007.

At more than 112 years, Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele is one of the five oldes cinemas in Germany.

In 1994, the fsk Collective, which runs the fsk cinema and the Peripher film distribution company, moved from Wiener Straße to the glass-fronted new building on Kreuzberg’s Oranienplatz. The cinema exudes a friendly, modernist charm: everything is functional and designed to ensure the best possible viewing experience of the very carefully curated programme. The fsk cinema screens only films that the team finds compelling in terms of content, politics and visuals.

Hackesche Höfe Kino

An independent cinema in the midst of gentrified Mitte, showing both mainstream and arthouse, mostly in its original version.

In addition to the regular program, audiences can also look forward to live broadcasts from the Met Opera in New York and the Berlin Philharmonic, the "The English One" sneak preview in English, several surf film nights, and two school cinema weeks: the Cinéfète and the Baden-Württemberg School Cinema Week. And for the youngest audience members, the Freiburg Puppet Theater makes regular guest appearances.

As a crossover theater, Harmonie screens major films that bridge the gap between arthouse and mainstream cinema.

Out of consideration for the neighbors, the hofkino is a “headphone cinema,” meaning you’ll be provided with wireless headphones so you can enjoy the film undisturbed and without the risk of spoilers. The headphones are cleaned and disinfected before each use. Comfortable lounge chairs and blankets are also available.

In the courtyard of the FMP1 office building, hofkino.berlin presents an open-air “headphone cinema.”

This small but perfectly equipped cinema not only offers 52 comfortable seats with plenty of legroom, but also a bar serving Italian wines, German beer and authentic Italian Carraro coffee, accompanied by homemade Italian snacks. The programme features a carefully curated selection of independent films, international festival hits and documentaries – all shown in their original language with subtitles – as well as regular events.

In addition, the monthly Queer Film Night, Gay Film Week – the oldest of its kind in Germany! – and short films are all part of the programme here. Short film highlights include the annual ‘Augenblicke’ festival, the Oscar Shorts programmes and the Golden Shorts on the shortest night of the year; and, of course, the team at Freiburg’s independent cinemas also screens a short film as a supporting feature before every evening screening at the Kandelhof.

Together with the Harmonie and Friedrichsbau cinemas, the Kandelhof forms the ‘Freiburg Independent Cinemas’, which were awarded the prize for Europe’s best programme by the Europa Cinemas network in 2007.

The Kandelhof is particularly popular with an older audience, as it is screens a large number of literary adaptations.

The Cologne Short Film Festival (KFFK) screens the latest short films at the Filmhaus, Filmforum, OFF Broadways, the Temporary Gallery, and the Lichtspiele Kalk. The festival features documentaries, fiction films, animated films, and hybrid formats, as well as VR productions and programs for both children and adults. The centerpiece of the festival is the competition program at the Filmhaus, and Cineville sponsors the Audience Award.

KFFK / Kurzfilmfestival Köln

The screenings take place in all weather conditions and use wireless headphones. Visitors receive a headphone receiver with a 3.5 mm audio jack at the open-air box office (for a small fee) and can connect their own wired headphones. Bluetooth headphones are not compatible. Simple wired headphones are also available for purchase on site.

Klick Kino

The Klick in Charlottenburg features a carefully curated program and has a particular fondness for Italian cinema.

Since 1974, offbeat films, trash cinema, and art films have been screening at Nuremberg’s KunstKulturQuartier under the name KommKino. This is made possible by a nonprofit organization and dedicated volunteers. In addition, the venue hosts retrospectives, themed evenings, festivals such as the “Italo-Cinema-Festival” or the action film showcase “Karacho,” and screenings attended by special guests. The venue is equipped with a 35-mm analog projector.

The program at KommKino is as diverse as the passions of its creators.

Using film to make different perspectives visible and strengthen a sense of community, Koki showcases the diversity of international film history alongside innovative contemporary films from around the world, presented in their original language.

Through exhibitions, symposia, readings, lectures, panel discussions, music, and performances, the cinema also engages with current debates around art, politics, and society. Its gallery provides a multimedia space for experimentation, bringing together and showcasing a wide range of artistic disciplines.

Since opening in 1940, the neighborhood cinema in Bilk has been rebuilt twice and has undergone several transformations – from an 800-seat auditorium to an arthouse cinema popular with students, and finally into a stylish, state-of-the-art first-run cinema with two screening rooms. Its most recent renovation was completed in 2023, with screening rooms 3 and 4 currently in development.

The newly renovated Metropol is Düsseldorf's oldest operating cinema.

The Metropolis Cinema is operating a pop-up cinema at Planet Harburg—the new branch of the Hamburg Archaeological Museum and Harburg City Museum—featuring a second auditorium with approximately 100 seats. Four days a week, the cinema collaborates with partners to organize film screenings and workshops.

Metropolis Kino Hamburg

The 1950s-era movie theater, which is a designated historic landmark, screens current films, rare titles, and classics.

The Metropolis Cinema, located in the heart of the city on Ebertplatz, is one of the city’s most historic movie theaters. Founded in 1950 and renovated several times, it is now a modern arthouse cinema with three digitally equipped auditoriums and a total of 411 seats. The theater offers: current films in their original language with subtitles, arthouse cinema, and a wide range of children’s and family programming. Classics, film series, and themed festivals provide opportunities for cinematic discoveries.

The Metropolis, named after Fritz Lang's classic silent film, is a modern art house cinema with nostalgic charm.

Right above the Schulterblatt, on the second floor of Kulturhaus 73, the former Schanzenkino73 is being transformed into a great new spot for movie lovers: two small theaters with great sound, a cozy lobby away from the hustle and bustle yet right in the heart of it all. The program features films that are often overlooked in regular lineups: classics and re-releases, experimental and socially conscious works, films from around the world in their original language with subtitles, and those from the immediate neighborhood.

Opened in 1933 as a multi-purpose hall for a hotel and restaurant, the Filmbühne was expanded in 1938 with the addition of a small foyer and a balcony. Since then, it has been lovingly renovated. As an arthouse cinema, it deliberately brings smaller German and European productions to Bonn for their first-run screenings, giving audiences the opportunity to discover films that might otherwise receive little or only a very limited theatrical release.

The neighborhood movie theater in Cologne's Old Town primarily screens European premieres in its beautiful, spacious auditorium.

Odonien, located in the heart of Cologne, is a venue offering cultural and club events, but it is also a massive open-air studio for artist Odo Rumpf, a sculpture park, a beer garden, a performance stage, a workshop, and a marketplace. Amid abstract art installations and an urban industrial vibe, concerts, exhibitions, open-air movie screenings, art markets, and comedy nights take place regularly.

The building has an extraordinary history. After numerous renovations and its reconstruction following World War II, the Rex has become a stylish arthouse cinema with more than 130 years of film heritage.

Today, the cinema focuses on arthouse films, European cinema, and carefully selected film highlights. With its historic atmosphere, comfortable seating, a wide selection of drinks, and a genuine passion for cinema, the Rex offers a truly special movie-going experience in the heart of Wuppertal.

The Rex Cinema on the Ring looks back on a history spanning over 90 years. Opened in 1928 and rebuilt in 1951 after being destroyed during the war, it is one of Cologne’s oldest cinemas. Following extensive renovations, it now offers films on seven screens and three different kinds of popcorn. The Rex screens the latest Hollywood and arthouse films, classics, documentaries, animated films, and themed film series.

A modern arthouse cinema with a rich history right in the heart of the city.

Originally opened in the early 1950s, the cinema closed at the end of the 1970s. In 1980, the student-run Argel Film Club was looking for a new venue. As the owner at the time insisted on daily screenings, some of the club's members founded Rex-Lichtspiel GmbH, which still operates the cinema today. The Rex focuses primarily on European arthouse cinema, while preview screenings are usually presented in their original language with subtitles.

The Rex-Lichtspieltheater was built in the early 1950s as a neighborhood cinema and reopened in 1981 by a group of students.

Since reopening in 2008, the cinema has presented a diverse program across two screening rooms, featuring European arthouse productions, independent films, and carefully selected blockbusters. Scala Cinema

Built in the 1950s, the Scala is the oldest operating cinema in Leverkusen.

From the café, visitors can enjoy a wonderful view over Bremen's Viertel district. The cinema's program focuses on new arthouse films from around the world, documentaries, sneak previews, and screenings in their original language. Special premieres are often accompanied by appearances from actors or directors.

Schauburg 

The historic Schauburg is Bremen's largest arthouse cinema.

Sputnik Kino

Berlin's highest cinema (5th floor, no elevator) offers a fantastic view of the city.

The Studio Kino, located in the former mirror factory, screens original versions and hosts film series and festivals.

Located in the heart of Babelsberg – one of Europe's most renowned filmmaking districts – the Thalia Programmkino is a beloved neighborhood cinema and an integral part of cultural life in Potsdam. Offering films for both the heart and the mind, it has been bringing outstanding cinema to audiences for generations.

Throughout its hundred-year history, the cinema has lived through five political systems and numerous crises. Today, it remains a vibrant meeting place for film lovers and was named Germany's Best Arthouse Cinema in 2016.

Thalia Potsdam

The Thalia Programmkino is a beloved neighborhood cinema and a key part of cultural life in Babelsberg and Potsdam.

Founded in 1979 by a group of film enthusiasts, the cinema was created to bring “the great classics and the promising new unknowns” to Fürth. Today, the Uferpalast is located in the Kulturforum (formerly a slaughterhouse) and continues to be run by the members of the Kinokooperative Fürth. Operated entirely by volunteers, it offers daily screenings in both digital and analogue formats, presenting films that its members consider truly worth seeing.

The program includes “the new and the great, the old and still great,” as well as silent films with live accompaniment, curated film series, and discussions.

The cinema is a member of the Bundesverband kommunale Filmarbeit e.V. (German Association of Municipal Cinemas).
