In 2004, the director Elsa is admitted to A&E following a severe migraine attack. She hasn’t made a feature film for some time, having worked only on commercials. After being discharged, she struggles with panic attacks, but also begins writing again – about her own story. It then transpires that Elsa herself is merely a character in the screenplay by Raúl, a director who bears a striking resemblance to Pedro Almodóvar and who is also grappling with a creative crisis...

BITTERES FEST revolves, in a playful and mischievous self-reflective manner, around themes that have long preoccupied Almodóvar: illness, creativity and solace; the relationship between art and reality; and, in particular, the strange, bitter process by which an artist transforms lived experience into art.

Elsa, the director, is going through a creative crisis – and is herself a character in the screenplay written by director Rául, who is also at a creative impasse.
