All My Sisters

In his long-term study ALL MY SISTERS, Massoud Bakhshi offers a personal glimpse into the lives of girls growing up in Iranian society. Over the course of several years, he followed his three nieces—Mahya, Zahra, and Maleka—in Tehran with his camera. Eighteen years later, he shows them the footage of their childhood and teenage years and films their reactions, thereby intertwining scenes of games, dances, their first days of school, and the purchase of their first headscarf with the present. Adults—such as the mother, the grandmother, or Bakhshi himself—are heard speaking only in voice-over, while the radio or television provides background noise highlighting significant political events.
